Clippers Hold #1 Spot Host 2025 ACAC Championships

The Briercrest Men’s Basketball team, aka the Clippers, has made history by currently holding first place in the South Division of the ACAC with two weeks remaining in the regular season. While their position at the top is not yet clinched, this achievement has already earned them the honour of hosting the 2025 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship, with four games still left to play.
For the first time in the program’s history, the Clippers will bring this prestigious event to their home court in Caronport, Saskatchewan, celebrating years of dedication and growth.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for our program," said Head Coach Shane Sowden. "To see players who have been with the Clippers for 4–6 years have the chance to play at home for the championship is incredibly gratifying. It’s a testament to their hard work, commitment, and the growth we’ve achieved as a team."
A Season of Hard Work and Team Effort
A “team-first” mentality has fueled the Clippers’ success this season. Players have consistently prioritized trust and unity, setting aside personal egos to focus on collective achievement. This approach has paid off, as their outstanding performance throughout the season secured their position at the top of the ACAC South division.
The milestone signifies more than just a sporting achievement—it’s a moment of immense pride for the Briercrest community. Hosting the championship showcases the school’s progress and provides an unforgettable experience for the team, fans, and local supporters. "The opportunity to host our fans, who are the best in the ACAC, in our home gym means the world to us," added Sowden.
A Momentous Event for the Community
The 2025 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship will bring more than 1,000 visitors to Caronport. Over four exciting days, the event will host seven elite teams from Alberta, creating an atmosphere of energy and camaraderie across the campus. “Hosting this tournament represents a fantastic chance to showcase Briercrest’s facilities, our vibrant community, and the enthusiasm of our loyal fans,” said Sowden. "Athletic Director Stephen Clements has assembled a wonderful planning committee that is committed to putting on a memorable event for all of the participating teams, visitors, fans and Caronport community."
The event will require added seating capacity to accommodate the visitors, turning the campus into a hub of activity comparable to the school’s renowned "Youth Quake" gatherings. With this incredible level of engagement, the championship promises not only to highlight elite basketball talent but also to foster community spirit and pride.
Looking Ahead to the Championships
The Briercrest Clippers’ hosting privilege underscores the difficulty and rarity of earning such an honour in the ACAC. Visitors will experience an event significant not only for its competitive level but also for its ability to bring together athletes and fans in a celebration of sport.
Sowden expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received so far: “I am thankful and humbled by the amount of support and encouragement being provided by our school and local community for this event."
The Clippers’ historic achievement signals a bright future for the program and sets the stage for a championship event that will truly showcase what makes Briercrest such a special place.
